DESIGN SHOWCASE
This 2023 EFA Design Showcase winners and finalists are:
Environments for Aging announced the winners of the 27th annual Design Showcase, an annual awards program that recognizes outstanding achievements in the design of senior living communities. In January, a jury of industry professionals met and reviewed submissions. In the end, 43 projects were accepted for publication in the Showcase, with two receiving top honors as Award of Merit winners. Additionally, four projects received Honorable Mention recognition and five were named finalists. The winners were published in Environments for Aging’s Spring issue and recognized at the 2023 EFA Conference + Expo in Charlotte, N.C.

Submission Guidelines
Senior living community owners/operators as well as architects, interior designers, builders, and developers working in the senior living or long-term care market.
Who’s qualified to submit a project?
All projects must have been completed after January 2021. Projects that were previously published in the EFA Design Showcase can’t be resubmitted under the same construction category. See list of categories below.
Are there requirements regarding the age of the project?

Submission Process
Acceptance of Projects
Projects will be evaluated on four criteria:
Upon receipt of your reservation form, you will receive a submission guide and template for preparing your electronic presentation. Your presentation must include a project narrative, images, floor plans, and responses to jury questions. Your firm name must not appear within your presentation. If your project is accepted by the jury for publication, you will receive instructions for supplying the remainder of your publication materials (print-quality images, firm details, project team members, facility contact information, etc.).
Innovation
How did the team explore innovative solutions that were specific to the project? If technology was part of the process, how was it incorporated and what were the outcomes? Did these efforts impact quality of care or quality of life for residents? Did the innovations influence the business model?
Experience
How does the environment enhance the quality of life for residents, promote wellness, empower independence and person-centered care, and reinforce personal relationships between allwho work, live, and visit?
Aesthetics
How do the aesthetics (architectural style, interior design, materials, lighting, colors, etc.) contribute to meeting project goals? Describe specific design solutions that contribute to the well-being of residents, staff, and visitors.
Operations/Well-being
What were the desired outcomes the project team was trying to achieve and the end result (e.g., operational performance improvements, resident-centered care, operational flow)?

Awards and Recognition
A jury of industry experts will review and discuss all submitted projects to determine which ones will be accepted for publication (there is no guarantee of acceptance). In addition, the jury will determine which projects are worthy of special honors, including an Award of Merit or Honorable Mention.
Award winners will receive special recognition in the Spring 2024 issue of EFA, in EFA Design Showcase announcements, and at our annual Environments for Aging Conference + Expo. Finalists (projects deemed highly noteworthy) will also be recognized in the Spring 2024 issue of EFA and in EFA Design Showcase announcements. All participants with published projects will receive 25 complimentary copies ofthe magazine.
Submission Fees
A nonrefundable entry fee for all projects submitted will be invoiced in December. Projects accepted by the jury will be published in the Spring 2024 issue, and a publication fee (based on the number of pages selected to be published) will be invoiced at that time. We do not allow cancellations following receipt of your submission. Please note: If submitting jointly with another organization, invoicing can be split accordingly.

will appoint an esteemed panel of industry experts to review projects from across the nation and recognize those that best address the needs of the aging population, from skilled nursing residents to active adults. All submissions approved by the program jury will be published in the Spring 2024 issue. Projects earning Honorable Mention and Award of Merit recognition will receive bonus editorial coverage in the issue and be celebrated during a magazine awards luncheon at the Environments for Aging Conference + Expo being held April 13-16, 2024, in Atlanta.
